Home Renovation Chronicles

Before and After

Before and After

A few years ago, we purchased our first home. I have to say, the experience was unlike any dream I had of moving into my first home. The house was a fixer-upper, it was in shambles and pretty much everything had fallen apart. The carpet was disgusting, there were cracks in the walls, appliances not functional, it was termite infested. You name it, we had it!

We were planning our wedding around the time we bought the home, so we couldn’t fork up the funds to do a full renovation, but we fixed a few things and did the best we could to make it livable. Our mantra when deciding what to fix at that time was “low cost, high impact”. With that, we decided to paint the house (by ourselves and with some help from friends and family) and changed the floors.

Over the years, we took on one major project after the other, focusing on the inside of the house. (I’ll share a post on some of the work we have done). We recently completed one of the largest and most impactful work we have done to date.

We remodeled and doubled the size of the master bathroom, turned an attic space into our Master closet, remodeled the kids’ bathroom, remodeled all the closets and installed new windows and doors across the entire house. A mouthful huh? I’m not sure what we were thinking to embark on a project of such scale at once, but I do tell you, we felt the pain of the experience. It took 3 rough months to complete. This was longer than any work we had ever done and wrought with more headaches than we had ever experienced, but despite that, the outcome is incredible!!

I’m still picking my jaw off the floor in light of how freaking gorgeous everything turned out!! The bathrooms truly look like somethingout of a magazine and I have a hard time believing that they are ours!! I love everything about the outcome and most especially thrilled that I finally have my makeup vanity table and will eventually have my shelves for storing my ever growing makeup collection!! Makeup lovers like myself can relate to the struggle of running out of room to store makeup, yet still needing to buy more. Yes, the struggle is ever so real, but I digress.

Anyway, without further ado, here are some pictures from the remodel.

My vanity!

Such a beauty!

Such a beauty!

Looking back at the journey and struggles with the house, I can’t help but acknowledge the hidden blessing. We have been able to remodel the house to our personal style and aesthetics. The reward of being immersed in the process of transforming something completely dilapidated to a thing of beauty, is incredibly priceless.

If you don’t have a home, all is not lost! You can bring your personality and aesthetics into your home with decor. If , like us, you have a fixer-upper, consider it a hidden gem but dont rush the renovation process. I know the realization of your “new” house being run down can be a tad bit embarrassing but dont stress. Take your time, giving careful attention to each project. ¬†The end will certainly justify the means. Whatever you do, make sure you do it glam2capacity!!

Date Night!

If you’ve made your way to the Glam2Capacity page of this blog, you’ve probably seen the post about the makeovers I gave during Bisola and Ash’s wedding. That day didn’t end at the makeovers, it ended with date night with Blaise and I ūüėČ

The Crochet Life

Unless you’re living under a rock, I’m certain you’re aware of the new trend of naturalesque hair styles amongst sistas! Natural hair is all the rage and more! A friend of mine recently went natural and a few months after, I saw a picture of her rocking a voluminous twist out. I wondered what speedy hair growing concoction she was using, and if I could get some. Truth be told, I scrolled through her pics to find where she mentions product she uses and actually went and purchased some of the products she recommended. Fast forward a few months after, I get introduced to the world of crochet and realize, my friend did not attain a miraculous hair growth, it was simply the magic of crochet!! [Read more…]

The Time to Take Care of Your Skin is NOW!

So although I’m in my 30’s, in my head, I’m somewhere in my early 20’s lol. Despite my mental denial, one thing that isnt fooled, is my skin! I’m¬†aging!

This week, I realized, for the first time ever, that I need to start taking care of my skin! For some reason, prior to now, it never occurred to me to prioritize skincare. I guess I thought my skin would remain in its youthful state forever. Looking at one’s¬†face everyday, its hard to spot the subtle changes, but nothing is truer and more sure¬†than the fact that we are aging. The youthful skin of your 20’s will most certainly not persist if the needed care is not provided. [Read more…]

What’s the Lesson?

What a day! Matter of fact, what a week! Yes, Yes, I’m aware its only Tuesday. This has been a rough week for me, to say the least. I’ve been extremely stressed out by work. My poor husband has been on the receiving end of my rants and complaints. This morning, during my typical recantation of my struggles ¬†etc., ¬†Blaise asked me a question. When he initially posed the question, I was so caught up in my tirade that I didn’t entertain the question. After I stepped away, I paused to reflect on what he had asked. His question was “what can you learn from this experience?”

For the Love of Puff Puff!

20150215_171152

So as a busy momma, I’m constantly in search of shortcuts to make my life easier. One of my recent favs is puff puff aka fried dough, yes, I know it sounds heavily calorie-laden, and it infact is, but the taste justifies it :). Those of us from West Africa are familiar with these delish snacks that are often fried over open fire on street corners.

The Struggle is Real!

“Beat Face”, in the true sense of “Beat”!

My life is a delicate balance of a myriad of carefully¬† planned activities ; any mishap and it all could go haywire. I sneak out of bed an hour before my crew wakes up, so I can have my moment of sanity, where I shower and do my mini-glam to prep for work. [Read more…]
