The Time to Take Care of Your Skin is NOW!

So although I’m in my 30’s, in my head, I’m somewhere in my early 20’s lol. Despite my mental denial, one thing that isnt fooled, is my skin! I’m aging!

This week, I realized, for the first time ever, that I need to start taking care of my skin! For some reason, prior to now, it never occurred to me to prioritize skincare. I guess I thought my skin would remain in its youthful state forever. Looking at one’s face everyday, its hard to spot the subtle changes, but nothing is truer and more sure than the fact that we are aging. The youthful skin of your 20’s will most certainly not persist if the needed care is not provided.

Great skin not only looks good but also makes your makeup application simpler! With healthy, vibrant skin, you have less need to cake and conceal your face with products.

Okay so now that I’ve made the case on the need to take care of your skin, you are probably wondering what it is that you need to do to get in on the action. Before I get into it, I’m going to first alert you to the market of anti-aging products and how they play on the fears of aging in their claim to  transform you etc. The reality is that, aging will occur and other than plastic surgery, no product can drastically transform you. What many of these products can do, is to slow down the aging process and limit future skin damage.

So as I’ve stated, I only recently embarked on my journey of skin care, so I’m for sure no pro at this. With that said, here are some essential tips I have gathered and would like to share with you :

  • Do not ever ever ever sleep in your makeup! Other than soiling your sheets and pillows, your are clogging your pores and speeding up your aging process. As tired as you might be after a long day, please devote a few minutes to cleaning your face. oh and no! Makeup wipes do not count as cleaning. Use some water and cleanser on that face. I personally use Cetaphil skin cleanser.
  • Use a toner after washing your face. Toner helps remove additional makeup residue and debris. It also helps balance the ph of your skin, protecting you from breakouts etc . I personally use a toner from the Kiehl’s line.
  • Exfoliate your skin at least once a week. Our skin builds dead cells over with time, so its important to exfoliate with a facial scrub 1 to 2 time a week to remove the dead cells. To be honest, this is one area that I slack on off. That said, if I were to reach out for a scrub, it would be St Ive’s Apricot scrub.

  • Do use sunscreen! Yes, sisters, I’m talking to you too! UV rays from sun exposure can cause your skin to age! Furthermore, as you most likely already know, sun exposure can elevate your chances of melanoma aka skin cancer. One way I ensure I use sunscreen is to only purchase face creams with sunscreen in them. Anything between spf 15-30 offers sufficient protection. I personally use the Boot’s Botanics day cream. I really like it because its light and does not interfere with my makeup application.
  • Eye cream is critical! Seeing my mom spend 100’s of dollars on creams to reverse the signs of her aging eyes is more than enough reason for me to take care of my eyes.  The skin around the eye is considerably more sensitive than that of your face, so you cannot use your face cream for your eyes. You need to invest in creams specifically formulated for the eye. Apply your eye cream day and night. When applying, make sure you don’t rub it vigorously into the skin. Apply it with your ring finger, using a patting motion. The eye cream I use is also from the Boot’s Botanics line.
  • Drink more water. See, I said, more, because I’m almost certain you are not drinking enough. I know I’m a big offender :). I cant seem to drink enough water! I have found that I drink as much water as I have access to. As a result, I make it a point to have a water cup around me at all times. As I type this, I spy my cup of water on my night stand. Okay, that’s my cue to take a sip :)  See, I told you, I drink as much as I have access to!

If you haven’t started any of the above, don’t beat yourself up about it, its not too late to get on it. If the list above seems overwhelming, take baby steps. You can decide to incorporate one item at a time until you have a full regimen. You do not have to use the brands or products I use. A number of drugstore brands offer decent skincare products, check them out!

Alright lovelies, I hope this has been useful in some way and that most importantly you will be joining me on the journey to better skin! Whatever you do, don’t forget to stay Glam2Capacity!
